All hail Marvel. “X-Men: Days of Future Past” is the third release of the summer and it surpasses all the rest. Hello Moviegoers! Bryan Singer returns to the franchise and delivers for X-Men. The film serves as a sequel to both “First Class” and “The Last Stand.” Uniting the cast from both films will definitely thrill the fans, but the movie stands on its own as superior. It’s arguably the best film in the X-men film series.

In the distant future, Sentinels a government project originated by Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage), are destroying all mutants, future mutants, and mutant sympathizers. The world has become desolate, and the younger X-Men have only survived due to Kitty’s (Ellen Page) ability to project someone’s consciousness into the past to warn and prevent their demise. Professor X (Patrick Stewart) along with Magneto (Ian McKellen), Storm (Halle Berry), and Wolvervine (Hugh Jackman) board the X-jet to the younger X-Men and hatch a plan to use Kitty’s powers to prevent the Sentinels from being created. Because the journey might kill anyone else, Wolvervine’s immortality makes him the only option and he is sent back in time to prevent Trask’s Sentinels from being made.
It’s 1973, and Xavier’s Institute is vacant due to the Vietnam War and only Hank McCoy/Beast (Nicholas Hoult) is there to answer the door. The younger Xavier (James McAvoy) has given up his powers in order to walk due to serum injections and he is in deep depression. Wolverine tells them of the Sentinels and the only way to stop it is to prevent Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence) from killing Trask and putting the Sentinel project in motion. Xavier is skeptical, but believes Wolverine. In order for their plan to work, they need Magneto (Michael Fassbender) who is being held at the Pentagon for the murder of JFK.
“Days of Future Pasts” takes place primarily in 1973, and Jackman and Lawrence run the show. The film really works, and effectively undoes the damage of “The Last Stand” in the best and most unimaginable way. The film also introduces new mutants, most notably Quicksilver (Evan Peters) who has one particularly awesome and hilarious scene. All in all, the film is fun and entertaining, and the details aren’t predictable which makes it that much better.
As far a superhero flicks go, this one is arguably the best Marvel’s ever offered and that’s saying something. Those new to the X-Men films won’t enjoy this as much as a seasoned viewer, but even that one strange hermit who’s never heard of mutants will get a kick out of this film. I give “X-Men: Days of Future Pasts” three and a half sweet potatoes out of four.
