The Last Jedi’s Rian Johnson explains lack of backstory for Snoke

The absence of a Snoke backstory came up when the crew came together for a Q&A.

The cast and director of “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” recently came together for a Q&A for BAFTAwhere they spoke in some depth about the film which is soon to be the highest grossing feature of the year. Despite the box office success of the film, Johnson found himself explaining (for the last time he probably wishes) why he chose not to delve into Supreme Leader Snoke’s backstory and flesh out the character even more. This has been a point of discontent for many fans, but Johnson goes on to say that particular treatment of Snoke was not for the movie he was making.

“In this particular story, it’s much more like the original trilogy, where with Snoke if you think about the actual scenes, if suddenly I had paused one of the scenes to give a 30 second monologue about who he was, it would have kind of stopped the scene in its tracks, I realized.

Even though it could have been interesting, something that fans were interested in, as storytellers, we have to kind of serve what the scenes need to be. It was a tough thing, even though I knew some fans were interested in it I also knew it wasn’t something that dramatically had a place in this movie. Hopefully it can be addressed elsewhere or even J.J. may address it in the next movie. But it’s not something that’s particularly interesting to Rey, so we kind of had to follow through.”

I, on the other hand, think the overarching issue is the movie that he made. Ultimately, over time, the conversation is going to always work its way back to the movie Rian Johnson made. And, I haven’t heard any acceptable season to give Johnson or any of Execs at Disney cover for this uneven and anticlimactic product.

The most significant and durable fan-base the industry has ever seen, deserves an exceptional Star Wars movie – it’s been a while.
